The Value Of Personal Integrity

It’s no secret that in order to build a strong, trusting relationship, you would be wise to keep your word when you promise to do something. This builds long lasting trust and loyalty.

If over time, you make it a habit to break your promises and neglect to keep your word, your relationships will deteriorate and you will lose the trust of those you are in relationship, and sooner or later the relationship will dissolve.

Wouldn’t it stand to reason then, that this same principle would apply in our relationship with ourselves? So often we say we will do something, like go to the gym, make healthier food choices, or treat ourselves with more kindness, and we neglect to follow through.

Why is it that most of us would rather break our word to ourselves then to someone else?

Integrity is one of my top three Values, in my business and in my personal life. Without my word I am not whole. The definition of Integrity that resonates so strongly for me is, “The state of being whole and undivided”.

It hasn’t always been that way for me. I would, like so many women, commit to do something for myself like, pay my bills on time, exercise more, not let my boyfriend treat me poorly, yet time and again, I would not keep my word. After many years of letting my SELF down, I chipped away at my confidence. My relationship with my SELF was broken!

What I have learned during my journey is that although it is of great importance to keep our word with those we give it to; it is of greater importance that we keep it with ourselves!

If you think about it, each time you break a promise or neglect to keep your word with a friend, eventually that friend will stop trusting you, right? After a while she will lose respect for you as well, and you will become someone she can trust NOT to depend on.

The same is true when you break your word with your SELF. It’s like building a strong foundation. With every promise you keep, no matter how big or small, you add a brick. The converse is also true. With every broken agreement, you must remove a brick, weakening that foundation. Make sense?

If our relationship with ourselves is based on broken promises and unfulfilled good intentions, then how can it ever be a stable, honest, trusting relationship?

The only way to create that trust and loyalty in your relationship with your SELF is by doing what you say and saying what you’ll do. Period.

Many believe – life is a struggle, life is suffering. Conflict characterizes existence in a finite world of limited resources and constrained opportunities. Life is a continuous competition to survive and a struggle to achieve. From this viewpoint it’s as if we have been thrust onto a battlefield. We must fight to overcome obstacles and attempt to face adversity with grit and determination. The gravity of this conviction weighs heavily. Those holding this belief are resigned to accept, “This is just the way it is.” But it is not the way it has to be.

Those who have determined life is endless suffering have come to believe they are separate, cut off, alone in a bewildering, dangerous world. The only assets available to engage arrayed forces of evil are cunning and strength. They can run, but cannot hide. They must conserve their energy, apply their instincts, and hope to come out on top — somehow, some way, some time. All in all, pretty dim prospects.

In the state of mind described here, hardship and misfortune loom at every turn. Strength is needed to wage the good fight, to struggle against the odds, to withstand the onslaught. Lost, the only hope is to continue to renew daily the strength to persevere. But, there is another way.

As a butterfly struggles to emerge from its cocoon, in the struggle the butterfly’s wings grow strong enough to fly. So too must we face adversity — it’s the nature of this reality. How we approach the adversity makes all the difference in the quality of the experience.

Life is not suffering – it’s a challenge – it’s a game. Adversity is the means to growth, the path to a new perspective, an enlightened reality. Every event or circumstance is an opportunity to develop, to grow, to become.

Instead of building insurmountable obstacles in your mind, recognize you have a choice. Choose the challenge and find comfort in the struggle, joy in the attempt — regardless of the outcome. Faith in the integrity and value of the effort is the difference between a life well lived and a dismal attempt to survive.

As Teddy Roosevelt once eloquently expressed, “The credit goes to the one in the arena marred with sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who dares greatly, who risks all in seeking great triumphs, for even if he fails he is not to be counted among those who know neither victory nor defeat.”

No matter how great the obstacle, how threatening the adversary, how bewildering the circumstance, or how exhausting the challenge, an unlimited supply of strength and determination is close at hand. The Power of Vision, Passion and Action

The World Cup has come around again. England’s football team went off to South Africa with players, media and supporters all claiming that this was the year. Yes, this was the year when the World Cup would be coming home to its rightful place.

However, as I write this article, things do not look that promising. Two draws with lesser opposition means that we must beat Slovenia to stand any realistic hope of getting to the knockout stage, much less win the tournament. For those readers who are not English and/or do not follow football, this situation of unfulfilled promise is not an unusual one for us long-suffering England supporters.

But, it has got me thinking about what it takes to succeed in such an event as the World Cup or the Olympics and I am reminded of Marilyn King. King was an American pentathlete who appeared in the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games.

While preparing for the ill-fated 1980 Olympics, Marilyn King suffered a back injury which resulted in her being bed-ridden for over four months and unable to train physically for her third Olympic team.

Rather than feel sorry for herself, she spent most of that time watching films of successful pentathletes, visualizing and feeling herself going through the same events. After using only mental training techniques, she came second at the Olympic trials for the Moscow Games, despite having any physical preparation.

Laid in her bed King could have been forgiven for feeling sorry for herself. But she didn’t. Instead she formulated her recipe for Olympic success as being vision plus passion plus action; three things that were notable by their absence from England’s performance against the USA and Algeria.

Vision is being absolutely clear about your objective or goal. It is claimed that as many as 19 out of 20 people do not have such clarity and so get blown about by the winds of life, reacting to events on a daily basis lacking any kind of focus.

Having passion means to have true commitment rather than a compliance to an end in mind. Statistics from the Corporate Leadership Council claim that only 1 in 10 people are truly committed to their work, with 76% being compliant to one degree or another.

Taking action is essential for success. Without action, nothing of consequence happens.

As Marilyn King puts it:

If you have passion and vision but you do not take action, you are a daydreamer.

If you have vision and action but you have no passion, you will be mediocre.

If you have passion and you take action but you have no vision, you will achieve the wrong goal.

But, if you have a clear vision, passion and you take action your chances of success will be high.

I’d see Elizabeth, one of my childhood friends, during the summer at our family beach club located in New Rochelle, NY, on the Long Island Sound. We were opposites. She was a competitive swimmer while my idea of swimming was hopping around the pool with one foot touching the bottom. We had tons of fun together splashing around, telling stories, and inventing games. Since we typically didn’t get to see each other much during the school year, I was excited one day during the spring to be invited over Elizabeth’s house. I vividly remember being amazed to see Elizabeth slide out a shoebox stash of Halloween candy from under her bed. I say “amazed” because the box was still well stocked and here it was, April. I’m pretty sure mine was gone about two weeks shy of Thanksgiving. In fact I never even bothered to transfer the loot to a shoebox and ate it right out of my plastic pumpkin carrier. Maybe Elizabeth knew something about self-control or mindful eating that I didn’t. On the other hand, I think some of the chocolate in her stash looked pretty stale.

Where is Your Secret Stash of Joy?

My client, Lynda, who works full time and is also the mother of three young children, told me that she has always operated with a mentality of “work now, enjoy later”. Her husband on the other hand tends to switch those around and so together, they are a good balance for each other. Self-restraint is a worthy virtue, and I am not suggesting that you suddenly become a glutton, run up your glycemic index, or indulge in every passing pleasure. Also, there are plenty of deeper joys that don’t involve consuming sugar, so work with me here, I’m just using the candy story to launch these two questions: When might you be postponing joy unnecessarily?

Where is your secret stash of joy?

Moments of joy are hidden within each day. Sometimes they can be found right alongside your work and sometimes they require that you step away.

Enjoy Now

To enjoy now, you don’t have to wait until you: a) get your act together, b) finish all your work, or c) have no problems. Phew, that’s a relief!
